South Island – Wanaka

Sunny and very windy today for our 30k bike ride from Lake Hawee along Hawee River Track and then around Lake Wanaka.

We booked with Wanaka Bike Tours. If you can’t find a discount at bookme.co.nz then contact them directly at Queenstownbike tours.com. Owner Dan picked us up in town and drove us to the start of the ride at the base of Lake Hawee. The ride is sort of downhill but there were enough small hills to wear me out. And flying down hill on a curvy rocky trail was challenging.

Beautiful beautiful scenery, a trail not a bike path, 11 mph winds with gusts to 18 sometimes on our back and sometimes on our nose. We rode through forests, along the beach, over a swing bridge, always with water in our right. The ride was challenging for me but I finished.

We rode with a young woman named Joanne who was from Singapore and has been traveling by herself for five months. We met many young people who were working and traveling through Australia and New Zealand on a work/holiday visa that is valid for one year.

The company offers more challenging mountain bike trips and heli bike trips.

After a rest we took a drive towards Mt. Aspiring. So much open land and one jaw dropping view after another.

And the clouds and the sky look so different even compared to Colorado.
