South Island – Milford Sound

Milford Sound is a glacier carved lake located in New Zealand’s Fiordland. It’s a major tourist site for visitors to the Queenstown area. Most people take the ardous 4.5 hour bus trip each way. On the way up the bus stops at several photo sites but it’s still a long journey.

We opted for the 40 minute flight to Milford Sound. These seven passenger planes only fly if weather is suitable. We were very lucky to have a sparkling sunny day after several days of cold and rain.

And the flight was worth every penny as you can see from the photos we took. We went with truesouthflights.com because I found a good deal for a morning flight on book me.co.nz.

These tour operators are very well organized. We landed at the tiny Milford airstrip and our pilot escorted us to a bus to ride five minutes to the port where he picks up another group and we board our boat.

The boats take about 100 to 150 passengers on a 1.5 hour cruise of Milford Sound out to the Tasman Sea.
