Scandinavia 2015 – Day 5 in Copenhagen

June 9

A beautiful sunny day to explore Copenhagen. Breakfast in our rooms -smoked salmon and cream cheese on a very dense rye bread. Picked up a Copenhagen card which we use public transportation and entrance to many museums.

We had read about a free city walking tour that started at City Hall. It was a great tour by Daniel, who shared his take on the city, Danish history, culture, social systems and some politics. Tour turned out to be 3.5 hours! We learned that their election time is four weeks, not 18 months.

The tour gave us a good orientation to the city and made it easier to get around on our own.

The most iconic location was on a canal in Nyhavn. Originally the seedy part of town, these sailors quarters are now gentrified. The canal is line with old boats, many owned by the City and moored there for the ambiance. We ate lunch in this area to try the famous Danish smorebrod which is an open faced sandwich served on a dense rye bread. You can order it with roast beef, pork, egg salad or a variety of seafood including Bonnies favorite, pickled herring.

We took a canal tour that was included in the city pass to see the city from the water. The blue house in this picture is where we stayed.

And everywhere there was water people were sitting outside enjoying a sunny day.

Evening plans were a stroll through Tivoli Gardens, which is the second oldest amusement park in the world. Supposedly Walt Disney modelled his parks after seeing Tivoli. This was a sweet park, only 20 acres and chock full of old fashioned carnival fun in a beautiful setting.
