Scandinavia 2015 – Day 18 Lofoten Islands

June 22

Bonnie, Barb and Les leave today to spend the night in Oslo. Bill and I leave tomrrow. Spent a little time exploring the village we are staying in as well as the the town of Svolvaer. The airport is on a spit of land they must have created to make a tiny runway.

Took some more drop dead view photos. This one from the car window… Bill won’t slow down for photos.

Stopped at a few more little towns on the way to the airport. This little town is called Kabelvag and this is the Nyvagar Rorbuhotell which was our 2nd choice as a place to stay in the Lofoten islands. It was about 50% more expensive than the little apartment we did rent and doesn’t really have a town center. So we are very happy with Tobiasbrygge that we found on booking.com. tobias

The Lofoten Cathedral is the largest wooden church in Norway. This version was built in 1898 by the King for the fisherman who came to Kabelvag during the season. Fires are a common story in Scandinavia and this is then 5th church on this site or in the village, the earliest being in 1120. The Lutheran churches are very simple and not ornate. The ceilings are designed to look like a boat.

Time to get rid of our remaining Noregian Kroners as we head to Amsterdam (euros) and then Atlanta.

And one last pic from the balcony before clouds roll in.

Bill and I had a quiet dinner in the only restaurant open at 8:30pm. For a place where the sun never sets, things close up early. We had a smoked whale appetizer…yes the Norwegians fish for whales. Them and the Japanese. And one last bowl of Norwegian fish soup with chunks of cod fish. And not the dried stuff.

Tomorrow night are the big festivities for midsummer. People have prepared their bonfires and will celebrate on June 23rd, the night before St. Johns day. The Swedes celebrated on Sat the 20th.

A couple of 11pm shots of our canal. It’s not as dark as pictures indicate but there is an orange glow on the horizon. Not sure if that means the sun dipped below the horizon briefly…hard to tell.

Tomorrow we start our journey back to hot Pensacola. We will spend the night in Amsterdam.
