Scandinavia 2015 – Day 17 Lofoten Islands

June 21

Summer Solstice,  Grammy’s bday,  Fathers Day. A day of “wows” and “OMG” views… and a day of celebrations.

It is the summer solstice, Grammy’s 91st birthday (she is in nursing home in Charleston), Father’s Day and the eve of Barb and Les’s 46th anniversary. And it ismour last day of vacation together, in a wonderful place and we are blessed.

Weather was brisk, windy and 40’s maybe up to 60. We drove South from our village along E10 with a German tourist brochure from the car company (guess the last name confused them). We passed through so many breathtaking views that the camera just cannot capture. Water everywhere, steep mountains, green valleys, bridges, tunnels, farm houses and small villages.

We stumbled upon the Viking Museum after seeing a billboard. It is located in Borg where the remains of a Viking Chieftains home was discovered in a farmers fields in the 1970’s. The museum is a reconstruction of the house and includes relics found at the site as well as people in costume showing how the Vikings lived. They think the house was used for 400 years and dates to the late 900’s. It is located on an hillside that rolls down to the water.

We made reservations to come back for the Viking dinner later on.

I picked up an English version of thr tourist guide and what a difference that made! We found a little fishing village called Nusfjord. This is a working fishing community but they have also preserved many historic norwegia buildings to create a museum as well of the life and work of the cod fishing industry. The codis caught in the winter months and dried on large wooden racks from Feb to April. The heads are removed and sold to Nigeria and the bodies elsewhere.

Viking Dinner

The dinner was a lot of fun, a little hokey and quite the tourist gimmick. We enjoyed the mead and had a nice visit with the young adults working there.

A detour to Eggum on the west coast of the Lofoten Islands, a nature preserve with mountains and lakes facing the sea and the midnight sun.
