Regensburg

Saturday was the first day on this cruise that we woke up to dreary weather as we sailed towards Regensburg. I love these cabins with tall sliding glass windows and a comfortable bed – great place to be lazy as I caught up on my journal and blog in the morning.

Our walking tour of the Medieval town of Regensburg had one of the better guides…Hannah. We docked right at the old city. Tour started in the rain but cleared up as the afternoon progressed.

Regensburg is the oldest town on the Danube, dating to a Celtic settlement around 500 BC and was the capital of Bavaria in the middle ages.  It has a 12th century stone bridge and some remains of the town wall built by Marcus Aurelius in 179AD.   Regensburg is very much a medieval town and was a big trade center in the middle ages because of its location on the Danube.

A Gothic cathedral dark and serious compared to Baroque churches in Passau and Melk. Saw the narrow streets where merchants lived and wider sunfilled streets where the wealthy lived. Statue of Don Juan, bastard son of a merchant’s daughter and Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Don Juan is best known for his role at the Battle of Lepanto where the West defeated the Ottomans in Greece in 1571.

Regensburg is famous for its very old restaurant, Wurst kuchen  (The Old Sausage Kitchen) right at the foot of the Old Bridge. 2.80 euros for two brats with saurkraut in a bun to go.

Nice shopping and tasty meal at a cafe (Picasso). I picked because it was the perfect location for a break. Bonnie sick today and she stayed on the ship.

Good gelato!

Lovely afternoon sailing into the sun with smooth waters and scenic shores. We hung out in the lounge enjoying a leisurely scenic sail.

Shot from our cabin door as I was getting ready for dinner.

The boat had a cheesy Bavarian musician playing in the lounge after dinner.

Entering locks outside Regensburg

Love this picture of my friend Pat – since we were 18 and suitemates at Trinity University!
