Day 7 – Winelands to Garden Route

Woke to beautiful day in vineyards. We got a good look at the beautiful setting for Cape Vue B&B, set among owners vineyards with large porches, a pool and views toward the mountains.

But no time to linger. After breakfast we packed up again and browsed the town of Franschoek, stocked up on some snacks for road and set the car in the direction of the Garden Route. Wow what a drive. South Africa is big country. We drove more than 7 hours through wine country, spectacular mountain passes, lush rural areas, through the Little Karoo (dessert but more brushy but not like us west dessert), on some dirt roads (a shortcut), through some lovely mountain villages and down to the sea. And me taking pictures along the way.

Finally saw baboons on side of the road. Bill has been watching YouTube videos of baboons opening car doors and wanted to see some in action!

Had a fabulous lunch at a little winery near Barrydale called Joubert-Tradauw. I read about it in Fodors guide book and told Bill to be on the lookout 12 km before Barrydale. Well we whizzed right by it and ended up in Barrydale. I insisted we go back and got my way. So worth it! Food and $5 bottle of red wine were amazing and setting was very French and peaceful. My dish was an ostrich steak … Passed lots of ostrich farms of the drive.

We still had three more hours of hard driving to arrive in Wilderness after dark. Found a great guest house and settled in for the night. Cinnamon Boutique on Sanctuary Road just above the main drag.

Two elderly gentleman running this luxurious place. The main level was open and roomy and decorated very tastefully with African collectibles. Huge windows and sliding glass doors let in light and overlooked the deck, pool and lush gardens. All of the rooms are large and luxurious. We got a king suite with fancy bathroom, balconies. Full hot served hot breakfast has been included everywhere except the Grahamstown guest house. In South Africa breakfast is fruits, cereal and yoghurt, two eggs cooked to order, bacon, sausage (english style), grilled tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms, bread, juice and coffee. Oh my. And you feel bad if you don’t eat what they offer.

Everywhere you drive, you see pedestrians walking in South Africa – even on the highways.
