Day 5 – Travel to Cappadoccia

Fly from Istanbul to Nevshir airport in Cappadoccia. Rough landing because of the winds. We had arranged for an airport pickup through Turkish Heritage Travel and a van was waiting to pickup a group of us. The 40 minute ride to Goreme was through somewhat desolate, dry flat terrain – until we reached Goreme.  As you will see in our pictures, the landscape in Cappadoccia is surreal.

Our hotel (Sultan Cave Suites) in Goreme is fabulous. Room is are in a cave with views looking over the valley. I love the sitting room with wrap around couches under windows. Great place for naps. Reminds me of the upstairs salon in the old family house in Litohoron Greece which would have been built during Ottoman era.

I had specifically reserved two rooms side by side with large balcony and views over the valley. Bill and I got the room we had reserved but Barb and Les were downstairs without a balcony. I had a little talk with the manager who said their room was let to someone else who was staying for seven nights. I would not leave his office until he agreed to move them to the room we had reserved!

Hotel gave us a quick ride up to Sunset Ridge to watch the sunset and then we had dinner at our hotel restaurant. Seden Anatolian Cuisine. Food was excellent – actually everything we’ve eaten in Turkey has been outstanding. My favorite dish has been the Turkish version of Avgolemono soup – made with yogurt, bulgar and whatever meat the cook throws in.

And the rising moon to cap off the day. Time to call it an early night as we have a balloon ride scheduled for our first morning with a 4:15am wake up call.
