Day 28 – Ferry from Paros to Athens

We struggled with whether to take the early ferry back to Athens from Paros or the 7:15 pm. What we really would have liked to do was stay an extra night so that we could attend one of the village panayiri festivals for Pentecost. But we thought we were leaving on a flight on Monday and decided that the earlier ferry would be easier (10:45am).

We got up early to take a walk on the beach – though it was too chilly to swim at 7:30am. We packed and dressed and then walked to the church in Naoussas where Nick was chanting for the Pentecost service. We only were able to stay 30 minutes but still it was nice.  Taxi back to the Port to meet the ferry.

The slow ferry was lovely – very windy in some parts of the ride but a leisurely 4 hrs to arrive in Piraeus.

We decided to take the metro to Syntagma to find our hotel because the taxi lines were long. Duh. We didn’t realize Bill had been pick-pocketed on the metro until we arrived at the New Hotel and were digging around for passports. The staff at the hotel were very helpful. We had to go to two police stations to get a police report, then to the metro office to report the loss (it was closed until Tuesday); called Embassy to setup an appointment for Tuesday and called Delta to reschedule flights for  Wednesday.

Hotel is lovely, close walk to old part of town, near metro stop. A bit on the expensive side for 3 nights. (I was willing to pay $200+ for one night). But too much  trouble to move again to a cheaper hotel. There are plenty in the area – many of which we’ve stayed in over the years.

We ate at a little restaurant recommended by Carole, called Melilotos. located near the Kapnikarea church on Ermou. It’s off the tourist path and offered traditional food with a modern flair.
