Day 24 – Sifnos to Serifos

Well today was our day to sail and sail we did. The worst of the storm had passed but winds were still blowing 25 to 35 knots all day. We sailed close to the wind for about 3 hours to get to Serifos. I got a little queasy and sat in my corner willing myself not to get sick. Ann was able to read while under sail.

When we arrived in Serifos, its a narrow opening where winds were really whipping it up, right on our nose, there were 4 boats all moored alongside the dock, taking up space for 10 boats. Captain was not happy. We dropped anchor in the bay to wait for wind to lay down. After a lovely nap it did and we moved to a spot on the old ferry dock.

By late afternoon the wind laid down and we ventured our to explore the old village way up high. And we walked all the way to the top and took bus down. The village is called Chora and we followed a steep mule path, a staircase. It took an hour even with many breaks. Each stopping point had views better than the ones before down to the harbor.

We took a break at a new little taverna in what was the old post office.

The village has two lovely platias that you pass on the way up to the very top where two churches are perched on lookout. The village is old, 17th and 18th century and many of the homes don’t look occupied. Chora is a very photogenic village with the classic Cyclades look – windmills, white washed buildings, colorful doors and windows and painted streets. The path to the very top is well marked and noone else was up there with us.

Well worth the walk up! Port town not impressive other than a good place to provision. Had a mediocre meal at Takis on the sea.
